In a word, DJ Helmy’s sound is of soul, he explains: “There’s a certain feeling a track with soul generates that you feel in your belly when you hear them, no matter the genre. The tempo, the organically human style, the integrity, the emotional memories, the vibe.. It’s all a feeling in your gut. Too often within the DJ culture we hear that heavy, computerised, overproduced doof doof doof sound that you typically feel in your head and it feels like we’re being forced to move to the music as opposed to letting the music inspire movement from within us.”

Helmy is an open format turntablist, meaning he mixes (and scratches) using all genres under the soul umbrella including classic, old & new Reggae, Hip Hop, Funk, Jazz, Afro-beat, Blues, Rock and other genres, keeping things changing and interesting throughout his sets. Steering clear of venues filled with horny youth out to impress, Helmy plays venues that attract the slightly more mature audience with tastes in quality, soulful sounds. Think live music venues, beer gardens, chilled lounges, hip bars, head nodding conversations, laughter, sing-alongs.. Think people connecting on a real level.. Again, think SOUL.

As the above upcoming gig calendar illustrates (scroll back for past gigs by the way); Helmy holds residencies (regular gigs) at hotspots along the East Coast from The Sunshine Coast in QLD down to Sydney NSW, to include: Solbar in Maroochydore, Rumpus Room in West End, The Brewery in Bellingen, The Shores Tavern & Pacific Hotel in Yamba, The Hoey Moey, Element Bar & The Coffs Hotel in Coffs Harbour, The Seaview Tavern in Woolgoolga, The Sawtell Hotel in Sawtell, The Beach House in Port Macquarie, Hustle & Flow in Redfern plus more continually added.

DJ Helmy is known to most as Triple J favourite; Illy’s tour scratch DJ & backup/hype MC, co-founder & DJ of Beats Working (Obese Records), as well as having DJ'd for iconic Melbourne names in the scene including Lotek, Elf Tranzporter, Candice Monique, MoneyKat, Syntax, Jamima Jones plus many more.  Shows have included headlining Obese Records’ 10 year Anniversary Block Party, Groovin’ The Moo Festival, Coaster Festival, Open Arms Festival, Global Festival as well as 2 national tours and sharing stages with internationals including Cypress Hill, Public Enemy, Xzibit, Afrika Bambaataa, Pharoahe Monch, DJ Maseo (of De La Soul), Mr Choc (of The Beat Junkies) and P Money plus national heavyweights like Mantra, The Herd, Drapht, Dialectrix, Spit Syndicate plus most Oz Hip Hop move-makers. Triple J has featured a mix of Helmy’s on their “Mix Up” show and the rhythm junkie also took out first place in the NSW North Coast DJ competition some years ago.

"I've been booking Tim Helmy for the last 14 months. I was referred to him from several sources and since the first contact, Tim has been a absolute delight to work with. He is punctual, professional, and a talent. His ability to read an audience is a pleasure to watch, as well as his interaction and repport with the venue and it's clients. Would highly recommend Tim Helmy."
- Georgina Chorley. Entertainment Manager: The Shores Tavern, Yamba NSW

"We have been booking DJ Helmy for many years and have built a solid business relationship. Tim is very passionate about music, which we love, and is a very talented DJ who has built a loyal reputation and very strong following. We have built events with Tim that still continue today to full houses. If you want a DJ full of soul and plenty of flavour whom has a clear style to suit, Helmy is your DJ."
- Sharni Seccombe. Offbeat Operations, Coffs Harbour NSW

"Over my 20 years of hiring DJs at my venues, I’ve noticed Helmy’s approach is much different to others when it comes to creating the right atmosphere at an event. He jumps from genre to genre quite quickly and always smoothly, catering to a large range of target audiences. Helmy also has this unique, outgoing personality which everyone loves, making him a key asset in my business. I can confidently recommend Tim to any venue requiring a quality DJ."
- Nathan Heng. Owner: Rumpus Room, West End (Brisbane) QLD

"Tim came to us out of the blue one day and it’s safe to say we liked him from the start. He fitted quickly and easily into our team and his professionalism makes him a dream to work with. His quirky demeanour and loveable cheekiness is infectious and his passion and enthusiasm for what he does make him a valuable asset. We are sad to see him go."
- Alex Johns. Owner: Solbar, Maroochydore QLD

Rumpus Room in West End is one of my favourite gigs, simply because the range of tracks mixed can be so great.. Mixing from Hermitude to Korn.. or from Toto to Tool for example.. A good track is a good track and mixing to please people with good ears is the greatest pleasure 🙂

Yamba is a small surfer's town with high tourist trade and loads of backpackers etc.. Best to keep it familiar and vibey for sing-alongs and revisiting classics to bring the people together..

Port Macquarie is another favourite of mine as the locals there know great tunes.. This was an early part of a set, around dinner time.. So I kept it kinda low key n boppy for convos etc..
